The Green Day Story
Hi, My name is Michael O'Rourke I'm 13 and from Michigan.

I have all of Green Day's Cd's and I've been a fan for
years.
Green Day, the trio from Berkeley,California who burst on
the American Punk scene in 1994 with there album Dookie.
They've been taged the leaders of the new punk revolution
and the cure to the music industry's grunge doldrums.

With Billie Joe Armstrong, Frank Edwin Wright the third(
tre cool), and Mike Durint. Who would of thought that an
album about boredom, laziness, masturbation, getting
stoned, whining, and self hatred would sell over eight
million copies?Well Green Day's good at what they do
they've been at it half their lives.

Here's their story...

Rodeo, California is were Billie joe and Mike became freinds in 1983.
They where only 12 years old. Billie joe's only had 1 guitar the same
guitar he has now it's a Stratocastor.

Billie was born Febuary 17, 1972, the youngest of a family of six kids.
His father was a jazz drummer and his mother a Hank Williams and Elvis
fan.Billie's father died when he was only ten years old and his mother
remaried and got waitressing job to support the family. He reportedly
started his music career when he was 5 years old when he would sing to
childrens hospitals and old folks homes.

Mike's childhood wasn't an easy one.His mother was a heroin adict who
gave him up for adoption soon after his birth May 4, 1972.At age 7 mikes
adoptive parents divorced and he was shiffted between his father and
his biological mother.Dirint left home for good at 15, living for a
short time with the armstrong family befor moving to a squat in a building
full of punk rockers. He finished high school while living on his own.
He also took a job as a cook to make enough money to get by.

Billie not long after moved with mike to a squat in oakland. This was the
inspiration behind the song welcome to paridice.

In the mean time the two young independents had found a home in the
established underground punk scene.where they created 39/smooth which these
days is available as 1039 smoothed out slappy hours. They did not yet have a
drummer so one was provided by the record company Look out records,John Kiftmeyer(the drummer) soon droped
out of the band.

So Mike and Billie whent to Gilmore street and recrutied a real punk veteran seventeen
year old tre cool, who has been playing drums professsionally since the age
of 12. Tre had grone up in the wilderness of the mendocinoi mountains, site
of green days lookout records audition there first record lable. Tre was
born December 9, 1972.

1992's kerplunk, green days second album now had the present day line up.Setting
behind his drums in drag must have been tre's way of rebelling aginst his own
musical acuman. But the whole album was recorded on a very low budjet of $1000
The only means of transpertation they had was tre's trucker father. It was all
getting out of controll with shows being canceld becuse of to many fans. The band
decided to meet with managment who now also handle offspeing, pennywise, rancid, and
other punk bands.Bill Bently vice president of media relations at warner brothers
records saw one of there shows and eventualy got them a record deal with one of there
titles reprise. The band spent the next summer recording dokie. Offspring would follow
green day all the way to the billboard top ten.Woodstock two was a big showing for
greeen day where it was said to be the biggest mud fight in music history.
